Chapter 3: StorageTek 4400 Interface
The DYNVM extension provides an interface with the StorageTek 4400
Automated Cartridge Subsystem (ACS) to aid in mounting and dismounting
cartridge volumes and reduce operator intervention required to satisfy
requests for tape volumes. Enabling this interface removes the requirement of
having an operator search for and mount a volume for a VSE request while
also removing the need for a response to DYNVM for a mount request.
The interface is a two-way IUCV interface between the DYNVM extension and
the service machine used for the ACS. It is initialized by DYNVM during its
initialization process. If this interface becomes disabled for any reason (for
example, the ACS server is shut down), DYNVM attempts to reestablish the
interface as soon as it becomes available.
Mount Requests
The following are the mount/dismount requests that may be encountered
when using the DYNVM-ACS interface:
Request Description
Scratch Volume Mount The DYNVM extension requests a scratch volume from the ACS to use for
processing any scratch requests that can be allocated on a cartridge volume.
DYNVM verifies that the volume is a valid scratch tape and then instructs the
volume to be mounted on an available drive. No operator intervention is
needed.
Active Volume Mount The DYNVM extension requests the ACS to check if the specific volume mounts
(Input or Output) reside there. If so, DYNVM then requests the volume to be
mounted on an available drive. No operator intervention is needed.
Volume Dismount Whenever an ACS volume is unloaded from a drive, DYNVM requests that the
ACS remove the volume from the drive and return it to ACS storage. If the
volume is a FOREIGN volume, the volume is ejected from the ACS, requiring
the operator to retrieve it.
CA Dynam/T VSE Interface
Mount requests passed to the DYNVM extension from CA Dynam/T VSE are
processed as Scratch and Active Mount requests.
